The Super Bowl Half Time Performances

Posted on: January 30, 2008 -

The Super Bowl Half Time Show

The Super Bowl half time show always creates a big hype. This show is usually the highlight of the event; it’s what makes the game an event close to a national holiday.

In the past, performers have ranged from The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Prince and we all remember the famous duo, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. So who will it be this year? Sponsored by Bridgestone, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Kylie Minogue, Soulja Boy, Jordin Sparks, Akon and finally the much anticipated Paula Abdul will all take the stage at some point during the day.

Paula Abdul is going to be performing? I thought she was a has-been? Well, yes that is true but this Super Bowl show will mark her comeback while she will perform her new single “dance like there’s no tomorrow”.

“This is a historical moment dude” said Randy Jackson, Paula’s American Idol buddy and creator of the new guest-heavy album, Music Club Vol.1 where Paula’s song will be the albums single track.

What do you think her performance will be like? As for me, I think, like most performers of the past, the comeback will bomb. I wonder if this is a good move for her. Regardless of how she does the media can be cruel and I think they are going to rip her to shreds.

American Gladiators a Hit with American Audience

Laila Ali

Laila Ali, along with Hulk Hogan (yes, he’s still alive) host American Gladiators (yes, it’s back).

American Gladiators is back in a BIG way. (We can probably blame the writers’ strike, but whatever.) What’s even better…Hulk Hogan is back, baby! Ewww…?

American Gladiators first surfaced back in the early ’90s and then disappeared. But thanks in large part to a growing interest in a) reality TV and b) mixed martial arts/boxing/hot chicks like Laila Ali in boxing gloves, it’s making a huge comeback. Last week’s two-hour premiere drew over 12 million viewers and the folks over at NBC couldn’t be happier:

“We’re extremely excited by the response to ‘American Gladiators,’” said John Wallace, president of the NBC local media division. “By adding the show to our weekend afternoon lineup, we can expose the program to a new audience and benefit from the local ad opportunities. It’s a win-win for all involved.”

My personal opinion? I tried to watch it but ended up turning the channel…I think I watched another CSI: Miami re-run or something equally lame. It was just too painful to see Hulk Hogan back on TV after all these years. The dude looks really old. And I felt super embarrassed for Laila Ali, too. I mean…she’s Muhammad Ali’s daughter. Yikes.

Maybe it’s your thing…you can catch American Gladiators every Monday at 8/7 Central.

Maker of Seahawks’ Hot Pants Predicts Seattle Victory

Posted on: -

Thank you King5News.com for blogging this fab interview with Chris Haffly of Gerbing’s Heated Clothing, the makers of the infamous ‘hot pants’ that Seahawks kicker Josh Brown will be wearing on game day tomorrow against the Green Bay Packers. According to Haffly, these pants may make all the difference in the world to a team more accustomed to playing in the rain instead of the snow:

When did the Seahawks first approach you about the gear?
Actually, we initially talked to them five years ago. However, after five years time, our heating technologies and advances in battery technology allowed us to make better products that were better suited for them.

Are Josh Brown’s hot pants customized? What do the pants look like and how do they operate?
What we did was we customized his existing overpants that he wears on the sidelines. We took those and then we outfitted it with our heating technology to the quads, hamstrings and both calves. There are two lithium small 7 volt batteries that individually control the heating system in each leg. So if he just wants to have one leg warm or both, he can do that. The batteries themselves have individual settings with five levels that he can control. It’s a custom job, but we do sell 12 volt pants that sell in the $199 range. Black is mostly all we sell. They just look like any other pants as the heating elements are concealed. I guess that is kind of our job though. We try to make the heating systems unnoticeable to the user as possible…except for the soothing warmth.

Has Josh used the hot pants before during a game?
Josh had mentioned that the pants are the pants that he has been using for years, which they are, but we just added our heating technology to them for this game. He has not used them for a game before.

What other gear are you providing the team?
We’re doing some heating mitts that are battery operated. We’re also doing Coach Holmgren’s game day jacket.

Did the Seahawks test them out yesterday?
Yes. The stuff was very welcome, considering what the weather forecast could possibly bring them. It’s a nice advantage to keep your hands warm.

Is heated clothing commonly worn by NFL players?
Not for playing football, but there are people who wear heated clothing for hunting, skiing and motorcycling.

What’s your prediction for tomorrow’s game?
Seahawks get off to a “hot” start and hang on with a 23 - 20 victory over the cold and achy Packers.

NBA All-Star Game

This year’s NBA All-Star Game is scheduled to take place in New Orleans on Sunday, February 17. As of today, Kevin Garnett (Celtics), LeBron James (Cavaliers) and Dwigh Howard (Magic) lead the Eastern Conference in votes. Over in the Western Conference Kobe Bryant (Lakers) and Yao Ming (Rockets) lead the pack.

This is the NBA’s 57th All-Star game; the first All-Star game was played back on March 2, 1951 at the Boston Garden. Traditionally, the best players from the Eastern and Western Conferences are chosen by the fans. The coaches then choose the reserve players (and coaches must not vote for their own players).

The Eastern Conference All-Stars lead the all-time series 34-22. Here are the result from the last 10 All-Star games:

1997 East 132, West 120 (Glen Rice, Charlotte Hornets)
1998 East 135, West 114 Michael Jordan, Chicago Bulls)
1999 Canceled–due to lockout
2000 West 137, East 126 (Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs; Shaquille O’Neal, Los Angeles Lakers)
2001 East 111, West 110 (Allen Iverson, Philadelphia 76ers)
2002 West 135, East 120 (Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers)
2003 West 155, East 145 (2OT)(Kevin Garnett, Minnesota Timberwolves)
2004 West 136, East 132 (Shaquille O’Neal, Los Angeles Lakers)
2005 East 125, West 115 (Allen Iverson, Philadelphia 76ers)
2006 East 122, West 120 (LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers)
2007 West 153, East 132 (Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers)

Odds to Win the 2008 NFC Championship

Posted on: January 9, 2008 -

With the NFL Divisional Playoffs still to take place this weekend, we might be getting a bit ahead of ourselves by betting on the team to win the 2008 NFC Championship. But then right about now is when the odds are the best. So let’s see what the sportsbooks are saying…

The Dallas Cowboys have had one heck of a year and as a result they’re the favorites at 4/5 odds to win the NFC Championship. QB Tony Romo has gotten himself into a bit of hot water over his recent vacation with his girlfriend and Hollywood hottie Jessica Simpson. (And who could forget Simpson’s appearance at one of his games…a lot of Cowboys fans are still blaming her for that loss.) But when it comes to the playoffs it’s all business — serious business. Oddly enough the New York Giants are in second place at 13/2 odds to win the NFC, while the Seattle Seahawks are at 6/1 odds and the Green Bay Packers are at 19/10 odds to win.

So what is it about the NFC that makes any team in that conference an unlikely candidate to win the Super Bowl? Statistics. More AFC teams have won the Lombardi Trophy than NFC teams. But don’t tell that to the New York Giants. These guys think they can go all the way…

“It’s very realistic,” said Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress prior to last weekend’s win. “We’re just looking at our wild-card position all the way to the top. We’re going to take it one step at a time. We know what kind of team we got. We know if we can come together and just play great football at this time, nobody can play with us.”

NFL Odds to Win the AFC Championships

AFC logo

It should come as no surprise (unless you’ve just awakened from a four-month coma) that the NFL record-setting 16-0 New England Patriots (16-0) are the favorite to win the AFC Championship with 4/9 odds at most sportsbooks. Next in line are the Indianapolis Colts at 3/1 odds to win the AFC. The Colts not only won the AFC last year but they went on to win the Super Bowl. The Jacksonville Jaguars are at 7/1 odds to win the AFC and pulling up the rear are the San Diego Chargers at 8/1 odds to win the AFC.

Can you imagine if the Chargers go on to take the AFC…and then the Super Bowl? Some analysts are saying that it’s a definite possibility. Jarrett Bell of USA Today, for example, really likes the Chargers. Here’s what he had to say when asked if San Diego can continue their rebound trend to win the Super Bowl:

“The Chargers — stunned in their playoff opener after posting an NFL-best 14-2 record last season — are positioned to make amends for last year’s crushing setback. San Diego brings NFL rushing champ LaDainian Tomlinson, a defense that leads the league in takeaways (48) and a six-game winning streak. Like Pittsburgh and Indianapolis the last two years, the Chargers (who started 1-3) are flying under the radar with low expectations and inconsistent young quarterback Philip Rivers. Can they win in Indianapolis and Foxborough, Mass.? Many of the players remain from the 2005 team that ended the Colts’ bid for a perfect season and dealt the Patriots a defeat (41-17) in October. Yet a key change is coach Norv Turner, whose predecessor, Marty Schottenheimer, was fired in February because of repeated flops in the playoffs.”

2008 Year of Superfights!

2008 year of superfights

“If you thought 2007 was great, wait till you see 2008,” fight-promoter and “golden boy” Oscar de la Hoya said. “You can’t rule anything out. All doors are open”

De la Hoya is looking to have a stadium fight this May and spoke longingly of Hatton who is seen my may as being one of the greatest British fighters of all time and is ranked among the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

This Mancunian also fought well enough to entice de la Hoya’s Hispanic fans to such a fight.

“If you have two of the most popular fighters in the world fight each other, it could be a great event. So I wouldn’t rule it out” chief executive Richard Schaefer of de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions said.

Also the Unbeaten Welshman Joe Calzaghe and US Veteran Bernard Hopkins are already calling each other out for a meeting most likely in April.

“Talks are ongoing and progressing pretty nicely.” Schaefer said. “Both fighters want it.”

The most sizzling possibility this year is a meeting of unbeaten rival welterweight champions, he American Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

A unification showdown between World Boxing Association champion Cotto, 31-0 with 25 knockouts, and Mayweather, 39-0 with 25 early stoppages, would be a clash of champions and pay better than Mayweather’s unlikely retirement talk.

“I let the promoters decide who I fight,” Cotto said. “I know what style Mayweather likes to fight and I’ll be happy to fight him. But it seems like whenever anyone mentions it, Mayweather always has an excuse.”

Cotto vs. Mayweather is very enticing! 2008 does look like an exciting year for the sport.
